Los Carpinteros: Vital Object
The exhibition “Los Carpinteros: Vital Object” offers a retrospective of one of the most highly-acclaimed art collectives at work today. With never-before-seen works of art bursting with ideas, that have been produced through the creative use of architecture, sculpture and design. Los Carpinteros consisting of Cuban artists Marco Castillo and Dagoberto Rodríguez – are well known for their strong social appeal and their acid, shrewd and humorous critical eye. The artists question the utility of things and explore the clash between function and object.

The public is able to follow each phase the collective has been through, from the 1990s up to never-before-seen pieces created especially for the exhibition in Brazil, starting from the early ideas and designs. The object is the protagonist of this exhibition, forced into constant metamorphosis by the artistic view expressed in drawings, created and tested in three-dimensional models, or achieving their maximum expression as a utopia in the large installations.
Inside Denmark’s giant LEGO house | CNN Travel

(CNN) — Get ready to embrace your inner child at Denmark’s new LEGO House — a 12,000-square meter house of fun, filled with 25 million iconic colorful building blocks.
Designed for the young and the young at heart, the building — located in LEGO’s hometown of Billund, Denmark — is the culmination of four years of hard work and imagination.
“With LEGO bricks, you can express yourself creatively and make anything imaginable. The possibilities are endless, and nowhere else in the world can you experience it in the same way as in #LEGO House,” says third-generation LEGO owner, Kjeld Kirk Kristiansen, in a statement.

Lego vice-chairman Kjeld Kirk Kristiansen has said that the company’s refusal to supply Ai Weiwei with a bulk order last year was a mistake.
“It was an internal mistake,” Kristiansen told the Wall Street Journal, adding that the decision to refuse the order was taken by a low level employee, who took the company’s policy too literally, and that the board was not involved.
“It is a typical example of what can go wrong in a big company,” said Thomas Kirk Kristiansen, son and successor of Kjeld Kirk Kristiansen.

Child’s play had been considered largely inconsequential, but Piaget saw that it was an essential part of a child’s cognitive development. Children were “learning by doing”. Today’s educational toy industry started from there.
Papert understood that mathematics was abstract and theoretical, and that was how it was taught to children. That was why most of them did not understand it. The answer, he thought, was to give children a physical way to think of mathematical ideas.

LI2: Lego Institute for Lego Investigation
▻http://norvig.com/LI2
LI2 History: LI2 was established with a 20,000,000 micro-dollar grant from the Norvig Foundation to set up three labs in Astronomy, Chemistry, and Paleontology. Labs in Biology and Robotics were added when two principal investigators were recruited from a local maker space called The Playroom after their long-time collaborators, a pair known as The Children, accepted academic positions*. Finally, with a generous 80,000 centi-cent gift from Google we added Computing Infrastructure: a state-of-the-art 24-server computing center where each server is a 2x2, with 4 PPUs (Plastic Processing Units). The computers are on a 100-GBASE network, but you can see in the photo that they also can function off the grid.
Director’s Statement: I’m uncomfortably excited to be the founding director of LI2. Recently I’ve seen innovative and agile new research institutes directed by my friends Oren, Richard, Saul, Bret, and Vero, and I’m thrilled to be able to start something new here. We will use a hybrid approach to fundamental research and development in areas that can have a big impact on bettering society.
Animal Research and Testing: No animals are harmed at LI2, nor are they constrained in any way from roaming free exactly as much as they would in the wild.

Artist Ai Weiwei banned from using Lego to build Australian artwork | Art and design | The Guardian
▻http://www.theguardian.com/artanddesign/2015/oct/24/artist-ai-weiwei-banned-by-lego-to-build-artwork-australian-exhibition
Chinese dissident artist Ai Weiwei says Danish toymaker Lego has refused his studio’s request for a bulk order of the plastic toys on political grounds.
In an Instagram post on Friday evening, the artist said Lego had refused the bulk order in September, quoting the company as saying it “cannot approve the use of Legos for political works”.
The artist’s accusation follows news this week that British firm Merlin Entertainments will open a Legoland park in Shanghai in conjunction with a Chinese partner. That announcement, timed to coincide with Chinese president Xi Jinping’s state visit to the UK, seems to have prompted the artist’s Instagram post.

Artist Ai Weiwei hits out over Lego ’censorship’ - BBC News
▻http://www.bbc.com/news/entertainment-arts-34630829
Artist Ai Weiwei has accused Lego of “censorship and discrimination” after the company refused to let him to use its bricks in a new exhibition.
Lego refused a bulk order for bricks that were to be used in a new artwork about political dissidents as part of an exhibition in Melbourne, Australia.
Toymaker Lego said it never sold directly to anyone wanting to use its product to make a political statement.
The artist has since been deluged with offers of Lego from supporters.
