Archive Team is a loose collective of rogue archivists, programmers, writers and loudmouths dedicated to saving our digital heritage. Since 2009 this variant force of nature has caught wind of shutdowns, shutoffs, mergers, and plain old deletions - and done our best to save the history before it’s lost forever. Along the way, we’ve gotten attention, resistance, press and discussion, but most importantly, we’ve gotten the message out: IT DOESN’T HAVE TO BE THIS WAY.

The wonder of the Internet Archive’s petabytes of stored data is that they’re a world treasure, providing access to a mass of information and stored culture, gathered from decades of history (in some case, centuries), and available in a (relatively) easy to find fashion. And as media and popular websites begin to cover the Archive’s mission in earnest, the audience is growing notably.

In each wave of interest, two questions come forward out of the accolades: What is the disaster recovery plan? And why is it in only one place?

The disaster recovery plan is variant but generally reliant on multiple locations for the data, and it is in one place because the fundraising and support methods so far can only provide a certain amount of disaster/backup plans.

Therefore, it is time for Archive Team to launch its most audacious project yet: Backing up the Internet Archive.

THE PHILOSOPHY

There is an effort called LOCKSS (Lots of Copies Keeps Stuff Safe) at Stanford [1] which is meant to provide as many tools and opportunities to save digital data as easily and quickly as possible. At Google, I’ve been told, they try for at least five copies of data stored in at least three physical locations. This is meant to provide a similar situation for the Internet Archive.

While this is kind of nutty and can be considered a strange ad-hoc situation, I believe that, given the opportunity to play a part in non-geographically-dependent copies of the Internet Archive, many folks will step forward, and we will have a good solution until the expensive “good” solution comes along. Also, it is a very nice statement of support.

Warum sich aber die Mühe machen, größtenteils unbekannte Gedichte und andere Inhalte zu sichern, die nur bestimmten Individuen oder allenfalls Grüppchen wichtig sind? Sind solche Daten es überhaupt wert, gerettet zu werden? Für Zweifler hat der Gründer von Archive Team, der im Internet nur als „Jason Scott“ auftritt, keinerlei Verständnis. Die große New York Public Library bewahre schließlich auch alte Restaurantkarten in ihrer Sammlung seltener Bücher auf. „Das stellt niemand infrage“, grantelt der Datenretter. Wenn Webseiten-Betreiber Nutzern erst anböten, ihre Seiten zu hosten und dann plötzlich dichtmachten, dann sei das, „als ob jemand in das Bibliotheken-Geschäft einsteigt und dann beschließt, es ist doch nichts für ihn und den Laden niederbrennt“. Dabei trage jede Seite das einmalige Handzeichen der Person, die sie entwickelt hat.

Es sind genau diese persönlichen Details, die das Archive Team zu retten versucht, Zeugnisse des alltäglichen Lebens, die für jemanden wichtig genug waren, um im Internet veröffentlicht zu werden. Von der „Petsburgh“ getauften Unterseite von GeoCities – einst der Drittplatzierte in der Rangliste der meistbesuchten Webdienste – sicherte das Archive Team zum Beispiel eine digitale Erinnerungstafel, die einer für seinen Hund Woodro angelegt hatte. Auf der Tafel stand zu lesen, dass Woodro zu Lebzeiten ein Fan der Musik von Jimmy Buffett gewesen war und am 5. Januar 1998 „seinen Kampf gegen Lungenkrebs verloren“ hatte. Für das Archive Team allemal ein Grund zum Eingreifen. Trotzdem gingen insgesamt 38 Millionen solcher selbst gestalteten Seiten verloren, als GeoCities von seinem Betreiber Yahoo 2009 wegen zu hoher Betriebskosten abgestellt wurde.
