The critics that accuse Apple of greenwashing have an argument. There are certainly more things that Apple could do, like make iPhones more repairable, or even upgradable. If you could upgrade your iPhone, you wouldn’t throw it away. What’s more, Apple is relying heavily on what it calls “high-quality carbon credits” to offset what it can’t eliminate.

“In 2020 you promised to bring Apple’s entire carbon footprint to zero by 2030,” Mother Nature says. “This is my third corporate responsibility gig today. So, who wants to disappoint me first?”

Apple acknowledges that it’s impossible to get to its goal entirely by reducing the amount of carbon in its products directly. It’s never going to get there without “offsets.” The problem is that everyone knows that buying carbon credits to offset your footprint is mostly just marketing. It’s pretending like you’re doing something without having to actually make the hard product design decisions.
