    https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2018-02-20/world-s-biggest-container-liner-looks-for-deals-outside-shipping

The world’s largest container company will start looking for takeover targets outside the shipping industry as it tries to pre-empt a new competitive landscape in which customers are morphing into rivals.

Jakob Stausholm, A. P. Moller-Maersk A/S’s chief financial officer and head of transformation and strategy, says the company needs to expand its land-based activities to meet a growing need from clients.

We’re currently very big in the ocean segment, and we’d rather grow in non-ocean, so it may be a good idea to look for M&A targets there,” Stausholm said in an interview Tuesday.

Now, Maersk is expanding its competitive universe to include different types of companies, including couriers like FedEx Corp. and UPS Inc., the CFO said.

We’re not going to be direct competitors to FedEx and UPS, but we will see them as peers,” he said. “They are the global integrators in their industries and we want to become that in our industry.

  • Why UPS trucks (almost) never turn left - CNN
    http://edition.cnn.com/2017/02/16/world/ups-trucks-no-left-turns/index.html
    (article de février 2017)

    What’s wrong with turning left?
Left-hand turns are generally considered unsafe and wasteful on right-hand driving roads, such as those in the US.
Left-turning traffic typically has to turn against a flow of oncoming vehicles,” explains Tom Vanderbilt, author of the book “Traffic: Why we drive the way we do.

This can not only be dangerous, but makes traffic build up, unless you install a dedicated left-turn ’phase,’ which is fine but basically adds 30 or 45 seconds to everyone else’s single time,” he said.

A study on crash factors in intersection-related accidents from the US National Highway Traffic Safety Association shows that turning left is one of the leading “critical pre-crash events” (an event that made a collision inevitable), occurring in 22.2 percent of crashes, as opposed to 1.2 percent for right turns. About 61 percent of crashes that occur while turning or crossing an intersection involve left turns, as opposed to just 3.1 percent involving right turns.

Left turns are also three times more likely to kill pedestrians than right ones, according to data collected by New York City’s transportation planners.

The right way to save fuel
A left-hand turn is also less fuel efficient,” said Jack Levis, UPS Senior Director of Process Management, “because your car’s idling longer, which is also not good for your vehicle.

UPS does not ban left turns outright, says Levis: “We will make left hand turns, but not ones that are unnecessary. We don’t need to go in circles all day long by making only right hand turns. We have tools analyze the number of left hand turns for each route, and we can work out which ones are avoidable.
The procedure is now incorporated in most countries around the world.

  • Will prohibiting left turns on Peace Avenue decrease traffic ? | The UB Post
    http://theubpost.mn/2017/08/13/will-prohibiting-left-turns-on-peace-avenue-decrease-traffic

Starting on August 15, left turns will be prohibited on Peace Avenue from Western Central Intersection to Eastern Central Intersection, reported the Traffic Police Department this week. A significant shake-up in the Ulaanbaatar road network, the move was a surprise to many and it has been a polarizing issue since the announcement. Will prohibiting left turns be able to decrease traffic flow as traffic authorities believe or will it only convolute an already chaotic road system?

Beginning on August 15, drivers will be prohibited from turning left at all seven intersections on Peace Avenue from Western Central Intersection to Eastern Central Intersection,” Major B.Ochirbat of the Traffic Police Department told media.

To put into perspective, drivers will not be allowed to turn left on Peace Avenue starting from around Gandantegchinlen Monastery (Barrun Durvun Zam) until Kempinski Hotel (Zuun Durvun Zam).

  • Shadow Regulations
    https://www.eff.org/issues/shadow-regulation

Shadow Regulations are voluntary agreements between companies (sometimes described as codes, principles, standards, or guidelines) to regulate your use of the Internet, often without your knowledge.

Shadow Regulation has become increasingly popular after the monumental failure of restrictive Internet laws such as ACTA, SOPA and PIPA. This is because Shadow Regulation can involve restrictions that are as effective as any law, but without the need for approval by a court or parliament. Indeed, sometimes Shadow Regulation is even initiated by government officials, who offer companies the Hobson’s choice of coming up with a “voluntary” solution, or submitting to government regulation.

How Big Pharma’s Shadow Regulation Censors the Internet
    https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2016/09/how-big-pharmas-shadow-regulation-censors-internet

This particular Shadow Regulation network contains a confusing web of similar-sounding organizations with overlapping memberships, such as the Alliance for Safe Online Pharmacies (ASOP) and the Center for Safe Internet Pharmacies (CSIP). In simple terms the former is comprised mostly of the pharmaceutical industry, whereas the latter pulls in its partners such as Internet platforms (Facebook, Google, Microsoft and Yahoo!), payment processors (PayPal, Mastercard, and American Express), delivery providers (UPS), and domain name companies (GoDaddy and Rightside). A third key player is LegitScript, which was instrumental in the formation of both ASOP and CSIP, and carries out most of the operational level arrangements that are agreed at a level of principle by those organizations. Internet users are not represented at board level in either ASOP, CSIP, or LegitScript.

A hallmark of Shadow Regulation is that government is also often quietly involved behind the scenes, and so it is here. The formation of the CSIP was announced at a White House-hosted industry event [PDF] on October 14, 2010, following months of talks between the administration and the CSIP’s founding industry members. Similarly, LegitScript is led by the former Associate Deputy Director Office of National Drug Control Policy, and subsists on lucrative contracts from government as well as from private industry. With this framework in place, the “voluntary” adoption by Internet intermediaries of measures that primarily benefit the pharmaceutical industry suddenly becomes very easily explicable.

No matter how good a woman is, she still can’t really teach him to be no man or daddy

    [Verse 1]
Used to walk around with a head full of naps
Chubby young kid with a head full of raps
Doing what he can, just trying to adapt
Jumped to the block off of grandma’s lap
Jumped to the block, so did every emcee
But gotta tell the truth, yeah, the block wasn’t me
Lookin’ for adventure, but the block was not
The block was real, Woo got killed
Half a year later, Big Spank got killed
And I got robbed, and Ronnie got shot
And I bought my first tape by 2Pac
And I got hard, cause I was smart
I knew that the weak and the meek couldn’t make it in the street
Had to assert yourself to survive
So I convinced myself it was better for me
To be Jack in The Lord of the Flies
    It’s a book I read, books I read
    Cause I’m addicted to literature
As a young boy rollin’ ’round with the clique
Cause of that I was insecure
I was insecure cause I realized
Ain’t no room for the civilized
When the wild men rumble in the jungle
And that’s why Simon and Piggy died
Ralph survives, but he lives changed
Nothin’s the same, shit’ll drive a man out his brain
    Drive a young man insane
My cousin Jimmy had a breakdown he ain’t never been the same
And he never will be again
If I could fix his brain
Take back the crack in his mind
Give it all back, you can have the racks and fame
I’d give it all back in exchange

    [Hook]
This is for the dads and the grandads
And the little homies that ain’t never had dads
This is for the uncles and the OGs
And the lil homies, and the YGs
This is for the men I look up to
And all the struggles that the men had to go through
For every man that’s ever had to man up
If that’s you, let me see you put your hands up

    [Verse 2]
I lost my youth, chasin’ my youth
Made me a youth in the back of a coupe
Teenage love, like Slick Rick said
I hit her with my Dougie and I had a gold tooth
    Fur Kangol, Filas too
She was light-skinned red gold tooth
But of course it didn’t last cause I had to go to college
And she was still in high school
Damn, I’m a dad, this is bad
This ain’t good, my baby’s in the hood
And I’m walkin’ ’round the black ivy league campus
Like I wish you house niggas would
So I go get a job, UPS
Where they treat you like BS and
You all know how the story goes
Drop out of college and sell ’ses
I figured I’d invest in studio time
    Drop rhymes, have success
But, mostly I got fronted on, stunted on
    Nigga dealt with some stress
I’ll take that two, take that three
Cause my momma got to see me on TV
And my grandmomma got to get her Grammy
And my grandaddy got to see his boy eat
See his boy grow, I wish I never had that show
I wish you never had to go
Wish you could meet my wife, wish you could see my life
But you had to see the light
Wish I had you one more day
Wish I had tomorrow that’s your birthday
We can sip gin, straight get fade
We can ride old schools through the trey

When Bob Santilli, a senior project manager at UPS, was invited in 2009 to his daughter’s fifth grade class on Career Day, he struggled with how to describe exactly what he did for a living. Eventually, he decided he would show the class a travel optimization problem of the kind he worked on, and impress them with how fun and complex it was. The challenge was to choose the most efficient route among six different stops, in a typical suburban-errands itinerary. The class devised their respective routes, then began picking them over. But one girl thought past the question of efficiency. “She says, my mom would never go to the store and buy perishable things—she didn’t use the word perishable, I did—and leave it in the car the whole day at work,” Santilli tells me.Her comment reflects a basic (...)

  • US: Synagogues terminate relationship with Boy Scouts of America over homophobic policies

Jewish leaders are now questioning if Scouting really serves the Jewish communityJewish leaders are now questioning if Scouting really serves the Jewish community

Synagogues and other Jewish organisations across the United States are terminating their relationships with the Boy Scouts of America over its policy of discriminating against gay members and leaders.

One example of the strained relationship between Jewish organisations and the Boy Scouts around homosexuality will be seen next week. Turo Synagogue in New Orleans has for a decade hosted an event for Boy Scouts to learn the virtues of the Ten Commandments over a Thanksgiving Day festival organised with local churches and mosques. But this year, for the first time, the synagogue withdrew its support because of Boy Scouts discriminatory policies towards gay people.

Back in July, after a two year review, the Boy Scouts of America announced it would retain its ban on gay members, volunteers and staff.

Rabbi Alexis Berk, who used to host the Boy Scouts at her Reform Synagogue told the Religious News Service: ““Maybe it would be one thing if this were a long-standing policy and they’d never revisited it — but the fact that they freshly revisited it and rendered a freshly bigoted opinion, well, I freshly feel like I can’t participate,” she said.
“I can’t participate in religious experience that uses religion as a hook on which to hang bigotry.”

Jewish scouting leader Alan Smason told the newswire: “My personal opinion is the Scouting policy in place now is wrong. They’re discriminating, and there’s no way to justify discrimination in this day and age.”
Meanwhile, the Chairman of the National Jewish Committee , A.J. Kreimer told the Religious News Service: “This position has taxed Scouting’s relationship with the Jewish community. Our committee’s motto since 1926 has been’Scouting Serves the Jewish Community’ — and that relationship has been strained.”

Last week, UPS became the latest corporate sponsor of the Boy Scouts of America to end its association with the organiation.

In a statement, UPS said: ““The UPS Foundation seeks to support organisations that are in alignment with our focus areas, guidelines, and non-discrimination policy.

“UPS and The UPS Foundation do not discriminate against any person or organisation with regard to categories protected by applicable law, as well as other categories protected by UPS and The UPS Foundation in our own policies. These include, but are not limited to race, gender, national origin, disability, sexual orientation, gender identity, veteran or military status, pregnancy, age and religion.”

Intel announced that it would block all donations to any Boy Scout troop that upheld the organisation’s discriminatory policies.

The issue of the policy has been prominent in the media of late, as Ryan Andresen, now 18, who joined the scouts when he was six, completed all of the requirements for the Eagle Scout Badge, but was refused the badge, once the work was completed.

  • UPS drops funding of Boy Scouts

    by Matt Comer Editor editor@goqnotes.com
Published: November 12, 2012 in Blog

The UPS has announced it will no longer fund the Boy Scouts of America due to the youth group’s anti-LGBT discrimination.

According to BuzzFeed, the UPS Foundation updated its website on Monday with this announcement: “The UPS Foundation seeks to support organizations that are in alignment with our focus areas, guidelines, and non-discrimination policy. UPS and The UPS Foundation do not discriminate against any person or organization with regard to categories protected by applicable law, as well as other categories protected by UPS and The UPS Foundation in our own policies. These include, but are not limited to race, gender, national origin, disability, sexual orientation, gender identity, veteran or military status, pregnancy, age and religion.”

UPS gave the Boy Scouts $167,000 in 2010. UPS joins Intel in dropping scout funding.

The Boy Scouts of America has long discriminated against openly gay youth and leaders. Gay men and young adults were also regularly tracked in the group’s so-called “perversion files” and listed there alongside accused and admitted child molesters.

    http://www.rionsabean.com/men-ups

My photography ranges between two different ends of a spectrum, both of which are held as just as important as the other. One half is overt social commentary, with most works focusing on gender and sexuality, wherein I attempt to bring light to the scrutiny and judgments of a society that defines human beings under rigid, antiquated terms. The other half of my photography is rooted in deeply personal subjects relating directly to myself and my shared experiences with others, sexual or otherwise, in both an attempt to release and cope, but also to demonstrate an emotional side that exists, but is rarely seen by others.

The firm has denied and vigorously defended the allegation that the typeface infringed FSI’s copyrights or that the typeface was an otherwise unauthorized derivative version of FSI’s FF DAX and FF META typefonts. FSI first raised its claims in the beginning of February, 2005.

Without any admission of liability, the parties have agreed to resolve this matter pursuant to the terms of a confidential settlement agreement in order to eliminate the uncertainties, burden and expense of potential, protracted litigation. As part of that settlement, the firm has agreed to pay FSI $17,500.

FF Dax is a humanist sans-serif typeface designed by #Hans_Reichel, published by FontFont library. The typeface is popular in advertising and in marketing. Other designs, Barmeno and Sari, more bulbous cousins of FF Dax with curvier ends, have also been designed by Reichel.
The UPS Sans typeface, used in most of United Parcel Service branding since 2005, is a modified version of FF Dax. W.M. Morrison, the British supermarket chain uses FF Dax on most in-store promotional material, hanging product location signs, and points of interest around the store - such as special offers and two-for-one deals.
In 2005 Hans Reichel reworked FF Dax into a cleaner, more mature text face called FF Daxline.
