Aux XIVe et XVème siècles, les universitaires bénéficient de nombreux privilèges. Ils leur permettent d’éprouver un fort sentiment d’appartenance à l’université et au statut d’exception qui est le sien dans la société médiévale. Écoliers et maîtres, au caractère volontiers querelleur, génèrent ainsi une certaine jalousie. Toute remise en cause de leur statut peut alors provoquer de graves conflits et de nombreuses violences.
Pour en rendre compte, Vsevolod Ioffé étudie la place qu’occupait l’injure et ses différentes formes dans le monde universitaire parisien. Il mobilise pour cela un large corpus, comprenant notamment les registres civils et criminels du Parlement de Paris, la liste des plaintes universitaires aux autorités laïques et ecclésiastiques ainsi que les Livres des Procureurs des différentes nations universitaire composant l’Université de Paris vers 1300–1450. Grâce à ces sources, il obtient un corpus répertoriant à la fois les auteurs et les cibles des offenses, leur nature et la restauration de l’honneur qui est nécessaire pour clore la querelle. L’injure apparaît comme alors comme une parole ou un geste outrageant, souvent associée à d’autres termes désignant à la fois la violence physique et l’atteinte à la personne morale (...)
