L’ODmaps de Wood & al. (2010) est une variante de la matrice ordonnée, réalisée du point de vue des lieux. Elle consiste à représenter l’effet des flux du point de vue des lieux d’origine (pour visualiser les destinations) et inversement pour les lieux de destination. Cette matrice ne décrit plus l’ensemble des relations entre les lieux d’une zone d’étude, mais une sélection.
Le procédé, tel que mis en œuvre par Wood et al. émerge en réponse à la difficulté de représenter des matrices en points proportionnels (ou en étoiles, ...), à cause de problèmes d’ajustements de la taille (du plus petit et du plus grand symbole) à la dimension de la cellule de la matrice (qui est, elle, constante).

Un article très intéressant où les auteurs montrent comment comparer deux types de (matrices de...) flux ! On apprécie particulièrement le soin mis à la présentation de la construction des matrices ... mais un peu moins le procédé de représentation adopté.

L’auteur représente ici la migration nette (2010-2015), qu’il indique résulter du calcul de la différence entre entrée et sorties qu’on suppose des lieux. Il calcule donc un solde, du point de vue des lieux (symboles proportionnels, positifs-négatifs...). Pour les liens, il utilise des traits plus ou moins gros. Si je suis son raisonnement, la matrice sous-jacente est très probablement anti-symétrique... voir la suite ici :

The author send us this migration flowmap. He represents here selection of net migration (2010-2015) he shows (in his blog) it is the result of calculating the difference between input and outputs flow I think from places point of view. He therefore calculated a balance and that is why he uses positive-negative proportional symbols. For linkage features, the author uses more or less non oriented thick lines. If I am its reasoning, the underlying flow matrix seems to be most likely an skew-symmetric one ... so, see more here :
